Scripture:

ROMANS 11:1-14:23

The Transformed Life

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:1-2

My Takeaways

Something Old

Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.
Romans 14:12

Something New

  • Romans 12:1 begins with the word "Therefore." This links the entire practical section of the book (chapters 12-16) back to the glorious theological truth of the Gospel established in chapters 1-11 (justification, redemption, security).
  • The message is clear: Because God has done all this for us through Christ, therefore we owe Him our entire lives.
  • This passage presents the Christian life as a two-fold command: Dedication to God and Distinction from the world.
  • "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God..." (ESV)
    • The Sacrifice: Under the Old Covenant, a sacrifice meant death. Under the New Covenant, Christ made the final death sacrifice, and we are now called to be a "living sacrifice." This means total dedication of our time, energy, resources, and very physical existence to God's service.
    • "Present" is a single, decisive, and irreversible act. It's giving over ownership of your physical life—your hands, eyes, lips, and feet—to Christ's authority.
    • Holy and Acceptable: This dedication is only possible because we are already holy (set apart) and acceptable (pleasing) in God's sight through Christ's righteousness (Romans 5:1). Our sacrifice is not to earn acceptance, but to express gratitude.
  • "...which is your spiritual worship." (ESV)
    • This redefines true worship. It is not confined to music or a church service; it is the daily, practical dedication of our surrendered lives to God.
  • The second verse outlines the twin processes—one to be resisted, and one to be pursued—that separate the believer from the world.
  • The Command to Resist (Conformation): "Do not be conformed to this world..." Romans 12:2 (ESV)
    • "Conformed" (syschÄ“matizĹŤ): This refers to adopting the outward, passing pattern or mold of the age.
    • "This world" (aiĹŤn) refers to the anti-God system of values, thinking, and behavior controlled by Satan and unbelief. This includes its media, its ambition, its morality, and its priorities.
    • The warning is against allowing the pressure of society, culture, or peers to stamp us into its temporary, ungodly mold.
  • The Command to Pursue (Transformation): "...but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Romans 12:2 (ESV)
    • "Transformed" (metamorphoĹŤ): This is the word from which we get metamorphosis.
    • It denotes a radical, internal change in essential nature—a permanent, inward renewal that results in a new outward form.
    • This internal change comes through the renewal of your mind. This is the ongoing process of replacing worldly thinking with the truth and perspective found in God's Word.
  • The Result (Proving God's Will): "...that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2 (ESV)
    • A transformed mind is the only way to genuinely discern and test (prove) God's will. When our minds are renewed, we naturally find joy and conviction in what God knows is good (beneficial), acceptable (pleasing to Him), and perfect (complete).
  • Romans 12:1-2 summarizes the whole purpose of salvation after justification: Sanctification. It is a lifelong process powered by the Holy Spirit.
  • The only way to avoid being pressed into the world's mold (conformation) is to dedicate ourselves to allowing God to change us from the inside out (transformation) by meditating on and obeying His Word.

Something to do

Are you in the act of conforming to the world, or being transformed? It is one or the other. You can’t do both.
