Scripture:

ROMANS 8:18-10:21

Romans Road

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 (ESV)

My Takeaways

Something Old

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39

Something New

  • The "Romans Road" is a simple, systematic way to understand the core message of the Gospel using just a few verses from Paul's letter to the Romans.
  • It answers the most important question in life: How can I be made right with a holy God?
  • The path has four clear steps: recognizing the Problem, realizing the Cost, accepting God's Provision, and making a Decision for Christ.
  • The Problem: The journey begins with recognizing our spiritual starting point: separation from God due to sin.
  • Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (ESV)
    • "All have sinned": This establishes that sin is a universal condition, not just a list of bad deeds. Every person, regardless of their background or morality, has missed the mark of God's perfect standard.
    • "Fall short of the glory of God": The goal is God's perfection, His "glory." Because of sin, we are spiritually bankrupt and cannot achieve righteousness on our own. We have a desperate, shared problem—we are separated from our Creator.
  • The Cost: Having established the problem, we must understand the consequence that the sin demands.
  • Romans 6:23 (Part 1): "For the wages of sin is death..."
    • "Wages": This is payment for work performed. Since we have "worked" at sinning (Romans 3:23), the just payment we have earned is death—not just physical death, but eternal spiritual separation from God (hell).
    • This establishes the absolute cost of sin. God is a just judge who must punish unrighteousness. We are unable to pay this debt ourselves.
  • The Provision: The road pivots from human failure and payment to God's intervention and grace.
  • Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (NKJV)
    • The Problem (sin) and the Cost (death) are solved by God's Provision. God did not wait for us to clean up our lives; He sent Christ to die for us while we were His enemies.
    • This highlights the central role of Christ's substitutionary death: He paid the death penalty (Tetelestai—"It is finished") that we owed.
  • Romans 6:23 (Part 2): "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (ESV)
    • The "wages" are death, but salvation is a "gift" (charis—grace). A gift cannot be earned; it can only be received. This gift is eternal life, freely offered through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • The Decision: The final step requires an active response: a decision to accept God's gift.
  • Romans 10:9: "...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (NKJV)
    • Belief in the Heart: This is the internal conviction that Jesus is God (Lord) and that His resurrection is the historical, conquering proof of His finished work. This is the source of salvation (faith).
    • Confession with the Mouth: This is the outward, public declaration of that faith. It is acknowledging Jesus' authority over your life and trusting in Him. This is the evidence of salvation.
  • Romans 10:10 summarizes the relationship: "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (NKJV)
  • The Final Step: The road doesn't end with simply knowing the verses; it ends with taking action—believing and confessing Jesus as Lord to receive the free gift of eternal life.

Something to do

We are called to the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)...knowing the Romans Road is a tool to help us in the ministry to which God has assigned us.
