Scripture:

EZEKIEL 26:15-28:26, 2 KINGS 25:3-7, JEREMIAH 52:6-11, JEREMIAH 39:2-10

The Time Has Come

Meanwhile, the Babylonians burned Jerusalem, including the royal palace and the houses of the people, and they tore down the walls of the city. Then Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took as exiles to Babylon the rest of the people who remained in the city, those who had defected to him, and everyone else who remained. But Nebuzaradan allowed some of the poorest people to stay behind in the land of Judah, and he assigned them to care for the vineyards and fields.

Jeremiah 39:8-10

My Takeaways

Something Old

But the Babylonian troops chased the king and overtook him on the plains of Jericho, for his men had all deserted him and scattered. They captured the king and took him to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where they pronounced judgment upon Zedekiah. They made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons. Then they gouged out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and led him away to Babylon.
2 Kings 25:5-7

Something New

  • The people of Judah and their King Zedekiah had repeatedly rebelled against Babylon and refused to heed Jeremiah's warnings. For over a year and a half, the city of Jerusalem was under siege.
  • This passage marks the climax of Jeremiah's long and difficult ministry, as his prophecies of impending doom are finally fulfilled.
  • The destruction of Jerusalem is not just a military defeat; it's the end of an era and a profound sign of God's judgment against His rebellious people.
  • The Babylonians "burned the king’s palace and the houses of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem." This was a definitive act of conquest, leaving no doubt about the city's fate. The walls, which were meant to be its protection, were utterly destroyed. This is a visual representation of God removing His hand of protection from His people.
  • The rest of the population, those who survived the siege, were taken into exile by Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard. The passage specifically mentions "the rest of the people who were left in the city, the deserters who had gone over to him, and the rest of the people who were left." Even those who had tried to save themselves by defecting were not spared from exile.
  • Nebuzaradan leaves some of the poorest people behind. He gives them "vineyards and fields" to cultivate. This is a small, but significant detail. It shows that God's judgment is not a complete annihilation.
  • Even in the midst of total destruction, there is a remnant, a small sign of hope for the future. These are the people with nothing, who had no land, and now God provides them with a new beginning in their homeland.
  • The fall of Jerusalem serves as a powerful reminder that God takes disobedience seriously. His warnings are not empty threats. Just as He acted in history to bring about the destruction He promised, He will act again to judge sin.
  • The Babylonians were a tool in God's hand. Even the most powerful empires on earth are subject to God's ultimate plan and purpose. He is sovereign over history and all nations.
  • The small remnant of the poor who were left behind symbolizes God's grace and faithfulness. Even when He must judge, He always preserves a remnant. There is always a glimmer of hope, a new beginning, even after the most devastating destruction.
  • Disobedience has consequences. God is faithful to both His promises and His warnings.
  • God's plan is not thwarted by human rebellion. He uses nations, even wicked ones, to accomplish His purposes.

Something to do

Remember: Even in the darkest moments, God provides a glimmer of hope and a way forward. His judgment is never without an element of mercy.
