Lord of All

After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him.

John 6:1-3

My Takeaways

Something Old

Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”
Matthew 14:24-27

Something New

  • The two miracles of the Feeding of the 5,000 and the Walking on Water occur back-to-back in the Gospels.
  • This arrangement is intentional. Jesus performs them as a unified demonstration of His identity as the Lord of Creation and the Sovereign Provider.
  • The first miracle shows His power over the physical realm (matter and provision). The second shows His power over the cosmic realm (chaos and the elements).
  • Together, they force the disciples and us to confront the question of who King Jesus truly is.
  • The disciples have only five loaves and two fish for over 5,000 people. This is a problem of human impossibility.
  • Jesus takes the minimal resources, gives thanks, and feeds everyone until they are satisfied. This is a miracle of new creation, producing something from virtually nothing. This act points to two profound truths:
    • Old Testament Fulfillment: It recalls the manna God provided daily in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Jesus is signaling that He is the New Moses and the ultimate fulfillment of God's provision.
    • The Bread of Life: Jesus was pointing to Himself as the true Bread of Heaven. He didn't come just to give bread, but to be bread, satisfying a deeper, eternal hunger.
  • The people, seeking a "belly-filling king" who was merely useful, wanted to seize Jesus and make Him an earthly king.
  • Jesus walks away from them, demonstrating that His purpose is greater than politics or physical need.
  • Immediately following the feeding, Jesus sends the disciples across the Sea of Galilee, where they are overtaken by a terrifying storm, revealing Jesus' authority over nature and chaos.
  • While they are rowing, separated from Jesus, in the dark, and struggling against a strong wind, their lives are imperiled, not by hunger, but by the chaotic elements of the sea.
  • Jesus walks to them on the raging water. In the Old Testament, walking on water is a prerogative reserved for God alone (Job 9:8; Psalm 77:19).
  • Jesus' action is a theophany—a visible manifestation of God's power and presence.
  • When the disciples are frightened, Jesus says, "It is I; do not be afraid" (John 6:20).
    • The Greek phrase, EgĹŤ eimi (It is I), often echoes the divine name "I AM". In this context, it is a statement of divine identity: "I am here, and therefore, you are safe."
  • The two miracles together complete the picture of Christ's Kingship: He controls the material world (the bread) and the forces of creation (the wind and waves). He is completely sufficient for every need.
  • The twin miracles of John 6 call us away from seeking Jesus only for His gifts (bread) and into a saving relationship with the Gift-Giver Himself.
  • Our ultimate satisfaction and security is not found in the cessation of the storm, but in the immediate presence of Jesus in the boat.

Something to do

Our lives are constantly threatened by the "hunger" of needs (money, resources) and the "wind" of chaos (sickness, distress, uncertainty). No matter the need, King Jesus will supply what you need, and no matter the storm, He will walk to you and be in your boat. His Provision and Presence are assured.
