Scripture:

ZECHARIAH 9:1-14:21

Finish Strong

Ask the LORD for rain in the spring,
for he makes the storm clouds.
And he will send showers of rain
so every field becomes a lush pasture.
Household gods give worthless advice,
    fortune-tellers predict only lies,
and interpreters of dreams pronounce
    falsehoods that give no comfort.
So my people are wandering like lost sheep;
they are attacked because they have no shepherd.

“My anger burns against your shepherds,
and I will punish these leaders. For the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has arrived
to look after Judah, his flock.
He will make them strong and glorious,
like a proud warhorse in battle.
From Judah will come the cornerstone,
    the tent peg,
the bow for battle,
    and all the rulers.

Zechariah 10:1-4

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • The palm branches waved during Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) carried evolving meanings throughout Jewish history.
  • The Maccabean revolt against Antiochus IV began in 167 BC. The Maccabees were victorious, cleansed the temple (dismantled the altar) and rededicated the temple, an event celebrated as Hanukkah. Waving the palm branches during Sukkot took on a meaning of political victory.
  • Jesus’ power came from love and sacrifice, not political might.
  • Audio from Ray Vander Laan about the Triumphal Entry

Something New

  • Another possible translation in vs 3 is “these male goats.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=zechariah%2010&version=NLT
  • The leaders failed to shepherd the people well, so the Lord would shepherd the flock Himself, bringing provision (rain, lush pasture) and a strong foundation (cornerstone).
  • The tent peg and the cornerstone both brought stability to hold up the structure.
  • “Alternatively, there is an Old Assyrian inscription of Irishum that suggests that a peg is driven into the wall of a temple as a symbol of its completion. In such a case the foundation stone marks the beginning of the project, while the peg marks the end of it. The terms both came to be used metaphorically as that which is foundational.” IVP Bible Background Commentary
  • Both the cornerstone and the tent peg symbolize a strong beginning and a strong completion.

Something to do

Start with a good foundation and finish strong.
