Scripture:

LAMENTATIONS 2:1-4:22

He is Faithful!!

The faithful love of the LORD never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
    his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance;
    therefore, I will hope in him!”

Lamentations 3:22-24

My Takeaways

Something Old

I am the one who has seen the afflictions
    that come from the rod of the LORD’s anger.
Lamentations 3:1

Something New

  • Lamentations is a collection of five poetic laments written after the fall of Jerusalem.
  • The book is raw and filled with grief, despair, and sorrow over the destruction of the city and the suffering of its people.
  • The author, traditionally thought to be Jeremiah, moves from a place of deep despair to a profound declaration of hope.
  • This two-verse passage is the heart of the book and its theological turning point. It’s a moment of light in a book of darkness.
  • The author is surrounded by ruin, yet he declares that God's steadfast love (Hebrew: hesed) has not been exhausted.
  • Hesed is a powerful word that means loyal, covenantal love. It’s a love that sticks with you no matter what.
  • The author isn't saying God won't punish sin, but that His core character of love and mercy remains unchanged.
  • God's mercies aren't just a limited resource; they are renewed daily. Every morning brings a fresh opportunity to experience His grace and forgiveness.
  • The author is not putting his hope in a change of circumstances, but in the unwavering character of God.
  • Hope isn’t found in circumstances, but in God's character. The author didn't wait for things to get better to find hope; he found it by looking to who God is. We can do the same when facing our own challenges.
  • God’s mercy is fresh every day. No matter what we did yesterday or how much we've messed up, we wake up to a new day with God's mercy waiting for us. This is a profound message of grace and a call to a fresh start.
  • Faithfulness is God's defining trait. The core of our hope is not that we are faithful, but that God is. We can trust Him because He is consistent and true to His promises, even when we are not.
  • God's love is a constant, even in the midst of suffering.
  • His mercies are renewed every morning, so we have a daily opportunity for a fresh start.
  • Our hope rests on God's unwavering faithfulness, not on our own strength or the stability of our circumstances.

Something to do

Life is hard. Sometimes the days seem longer and longer. We don’t think we can get through it. Our hope rests not in ourselves, but in the God of the Bible, Who is holy in His faithfulness. Perfect. Set apart. He is our portion. Rest in that truth….every morning.
