Scripture:

JEREMIAH 31:15-40, JEREMIAH 49:34-51:14

Never Again Remember

“But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the LORD. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the LORD.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the LORD. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

Jeremiah 31:33-34

My Takeaways

Something Old

In those days,” says the LORD,
“no sin will be found in Israel or in Judah,
for I will forgive the remnant I preserve.
Jeremiah 50:20

Something New

  • Jeremiah is known for his prophecies of judgment against Judah, but he also delivers messages of hope and restoration.
  • In Jeremiah 31, God promises to restore His people, Israel and Judah, from their exile.
  • The Old Covenant, established with Moses on Mount Sinai, had been broken by the people's disobedience.
  • In this context of failure, God promises a New Covenant. This covenant is not based on external laws carved on stone tablets, but on an internal transformation of the heart.
  • Internalizing the Law: "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts" (Jeremiah 31:33).
  • This isn't just about knowing the rules; it's about having a transformed nature that desires to follow God. The law will no longer be an external burden but an intrinsic part of who they are.
  • A Personal Relationship: "They will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest" (Jeremiah 31:34).
  • Under the Old Covenant, the priests were the mediators of God's law. In the New Covenant, everyone will have a personal, direct relationship with God.
  • The Forgiveness of Sins: The culmination of the New Covenant is found in this powerful statement: "I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more" (Jeremiah 31:34).
  • This isn't just a simple act of forgiveness. It's a fundamental change in how God relates to our sins.
  • God's Omniscience: God is omniscient, meaning He knows everything—past, present, and future. To say God "forgets" would contradict this core attribute. God cannot erase a memory from His mind because He is all-knowing.
  • A Conscious Choice: The phrase "will remember their sins no more" signifies a deliberate, conscious choice on God's part. It means God chooses not to hold our sins against us, to not bring them up, and to not use them to define us. It's an act of divine will, not a lapse in memory.
  • A Profound Forgiveness: This is a much deeper and more profound form of forgiveness than simple forgetting. Forgetting implies a lack of knowledge, which isn't the case.
  • God's act of choosing not to remember our sins demonstrates the depth of His grace and mercy. It's a promise that our past no longer has a hold on our future with Him. It's a deliberate act of reconciliation and restoration, a cornerstone of the New Covenant.
  • This promise is ultimately fulfilled through Jesus's sacrifice, which made this kind of forgiveness possible.

Something to do

  • Think of God's conscious choice to remember our sins no more.
  • Think about the love that He lavishes on us.
  • Think about the Cross…that made it all possible.
  • Let God’s goodness overwhelm you.
