Scripture:

JEREMIAH 12:1-15:21

God Remembers

Why then does my suffering continue?
Why is my wound so incurable?
Your help seems as uncertain as a seasonal brook,
like a spring that has gone dry.

Jeremiah 15:18

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Priests and leaders continued to do what looked good, and gave the appearance of doing holy things that God asked them to do, but these shiny looking things, these attempts to pacify God while practicing evil and selfishness, were unacceptable. All their sacrifices and rituals and fastings were a cover-up for their abuse of power and their own destructive ways.
  • “For even your brothers and the household of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you, even they have called aloud after you. Do not believe them, though they say nice things to you.”
    Jeremiah 12:6 (NASB)
  • Are we trying to cover up with things that look good on the surface for ourselves or for others, when there is wrong being done? Is there sin underneath the facade that needs to be exposed?

Something New

  • Jeremiah sought understanding from God about justice. LORD, you always give me justice when I bring a case before you. So let me bring you this complaint: Why are the wicked so prosperous? Why are evil people so happy? Jeremiah 12:1
  • Sometimes God is redirecting us to a different kind of provision (Elijah). Sometimes we just have to wait and trust there is more going on than we can see (Joseph). Sometimes we endure the consequences of someone else’s bad choices (David).
  • Jeremiah is asking God: Will your goodness run out? Can I trust you?
  • Remembering God’s faithfulness to us in the past can increase our confidence that He will continue to be faithful. What memory of God’s provision or faithfulness can you hold close to your heart when it's hard to trust? Recall past faithfulness if you can’t find faith for the future.
  • Trust does not mean no worries, anxiety, pain, or fear. Trust can be the smallest step or choice of believing God is with us and taking care of us despite worries, anxiety, pain, or fear.
  • When we struggle to trust, God is still near. He is compassionate.
  • When God “remembers” it means He is getting ready to do something. He didn’t forget.

Something to do

Be honest with God about your doubts. Recall His past provision. Know that God “remembers.”
