Take Time to Build it Right

Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
“Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem,
     a firm and tested stone.
It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on.
Whoever believes need never be shaken.”

Isaiah 28:16

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Samaria was the “wreath” of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, but they had turned to indulgence and wickedness, so it wasn’t a “pretty” wreath!
  • God would be the wreath, the crown of glory and splendor for His people
  • Significance of the city gate in ancient Israel https://www.thattheworldmayknow.com/city-gates
  • “The battle at the gates” was more than a physical, military battle–it was the battle for justice and righteousness in the community of God’s people.

Something New

  • חוּשׁ (chuwsh) to hasten, to hurry, to be eager (translated as “shaken” in the NLT)
  • Whoever believes will not be hasty/act hastily.
  • “Israelite Iron Age architectural design made increasing use of cut-stone masonry over the rough boulders and rubble construction of earlier periods. In order to provide stability and to bind two adjoining walls together, a finely shaped block of stone was inserted that became the cornerstone. It would have been a larger stone than those normally used and its insertion often required special effort or rituals.” IVP Bible Background Commentary
  • The stone was “tested” to be sure it would hold.
  • Take time to know what you believe, and why you believe it.
  • Building something solid and lasting takes time.
  • Stay humble and be open to learning new things.
  • Build knowledge AND character. All knowledge is good WHEN it is from a foundation of  loving God and loving others.

Something to do

Take your time; build something strong and lasting and good.
