Scripture:

PSALM 79-82

Pour Out Your Wrath

Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you—
on kingdoms that do not call upon your name.
For they have devoured your people Israel,
making the land a desolate wilderness.

Psalm 79:6-7

My Takeaways

Something Old

When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their testimony. They shouted to the Lord and said, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?”
Revelation 6:9-10

Something New

  • The book of Psalms is a song book for Israel.
  • It also shows us the emotional cries of the human heart.
  • We don’t run away from difficult emotions expressed within these psalms, but try to understand them.
  • Imprecatory psalms are psalms that invoke judgment, calamity, or curses upon one’s enemies.
  • In ancient cultures, these were more common and accepted forms of prayer in the face of oppression.
  • Imprecatory psalms cry out for God’s justice and the desire for Him to right the wrongs committed.
  • Imprecatory psalms acknowledge raw and honest emotions.
  • Imprecatory psalms are still relevant and offer insights for today.

  • Acknowledging the reality of evil.
  • It is right to be disturbed by what is wrong.
  • Validating difficult emotions.
  • We might feel guilty for experiencing anger or a desire for justice.
  • We see these emotions are a longing for God’s intervention and a genuine response to profound brokenness.
  • Matthew 5:44
  • Understanding the imprecatory psalms helps us to see the radical nature of Jesus and the new covenant.
