Scripture:

PSALM 35-38

Be Soft

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

Psalm 37:4

My Takeaways

Something Old

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O LORD.
Psalm 36:6

God cares about the animals!

Something New

  • עָנַג  (ah-nog): To delight, to take pleasure in, to be soft, pliable. Also could pertain to luxurious or delicateness. This term can also refer to excessive indulgence–a reminder of the balance between enjoying and indulging.
  • וְהִתְעַנַּ֥ג  (wÉ™-hiṯ-‘an-naḡ): Vav-Conj, Imperative, Masculine singular
  • Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
    Psalm 37:10-11 (NRSVUE)
  • This Psalm is about:
    • the injustice of the wicked, and the prosperity of the wicked.
    • waiting on God when things look unjust.
    • God’s faithfulness when we are treated unjustly.
    • God as our refuge and rescuer.
    • trusting in the Lord for justice and vindication.
  • David is angry about injustice, and rightly so. He is not saying to be ok with injustice, but to trust that God sees the innocent and is their rescuer.

Something to do

Be soft, pliable–don’t let injustice harden your heart. Rest in the luxury of God’s love.
