Scripture:

PSALM 27-32

Perspective

Sing to the LORD, all you godly ones!
Praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime!
Weeping may last through the night,
but joy comes with the morning.

Psalm 30:4-5

My Takeaways

Something Old

The one thing I ask of the LORD—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
delighting in the LORD’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
Psalm 27:4

Something New

  • Language arts lesson time!
  • Antithesis:a figure of speech in which an opposition or contrast of ideas is expressed by parallelism of words that are the opposites of, or strongly contrasted with, each other, such as “hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins”.
  • Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
  • David brings forward ideas to contrast.
  • The first idea is “His anger” versus “His favor”.
  • We see the brevity of one and the perpetuity of the other.
  • The second idea is “weeping” is set against “joy.”
  • Weeping and joy are personified.
  • Two guests have come.
  • One is dressed for the night.
  • The other is fresh and sunny for the morning.
  • Sorrow is transitory.
  • Joy is persistent.
  • Sorrow transitions into joy.
  • If we could just look at our life’s story with the same attitude.
  • We need to discern what is the temporary, and what is the permanent.
  • “But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. On the day when I act, you will tread upon the wicked as if they were dust under your feet,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
    Malachi 4:2-3
  • For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
    2 Corinthians 4:17-18
  • The Story I'll Tell

Something to do

In every circumstance, discern what is temporal and what is eternal.
