Scripture:

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-4:23

Citizens of Heaven

But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

Philippians 3:20-21

My Takeaways

Something Old

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Philippians 3:13-14

Something New

  • Paul wrote this letter to the church in Philippi, a Roman colony whose citizens were fiercely proud of their Roman status and the privileges it afforded them, even while living far from Rome.
  • Paul uses this familiar concept of citizenship to draw a profound contrast with the Christian life: Our true, ultimate citizenship is not on earth, but in heaven.
  • This truth dictates how we live, how we wait, and what we anticipate.
  • The core concept of heavenly citizenship establishes our identity and loyalty.
  • Our Citizenship (politeuma): This Greek word refers not just to a legal residence, but to the form of government or the commonwealth to which one belongs.
  • For the Christian, our legal allegiance, our ultimate government, and the laws that govern us are heavenly, not earthly.
  • Paul's message is that while we live physically on earth, we are spiritually ambassadors or resident aliens. Our true home, culture, values, and laws belong to another Kingdom.
  • This separation provides two important things:
  • Perspective: Earthly pressures, struggles, and political anxieties are temporary distractions.
  • Moral Standard: We are not governed by the passing customs of this age (conformation to the world), but by the eternal laws of Christ's Kingdom.
  • As heavenly citizens, we are called to live distinctively—to represent the King and uphold the constitution (the Scriptures) of our true homeland.
  • Heavenly citizenship creates a specific posture toward the future: active anticipation.
  • "From which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ."
  • Eager Waiting: The true citizen of heaven is not settling down comfortably on earth; their life is oriented toward the return of the King. This attitude of hope prevents us from becoming overly invested in or heartbroken by earthly affairs.
  • The Savior: Paul emphasizes that we wait for Him as the Savior. While He has already saved us from the penalty of sin, His return will complete our salvation by delivering us from the presence of sin in our mortal bodies.
  • This waiting is focused entirely on the person of Christ, not on a particular theological timeline or prediction. The promise is the culmination of all history… the glorious arrival of our Lord.
  • Earthly citizens focus on earthly desires; heavenly citizens focus on the coming King.
  • The culmination of our citizenship is a radical and powerful physical transformation.
  • The Goal of Christ's Power: "[He] will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body..."
  • Transformation: Our current body is called "lowly" or "humble" because it is subject to weakness, sin, sickness, decay, and death.
  • At His return, Christ will perform a metamorphosis (a change in form and nature), making our bodies like His glorious, resurrected body.
  • This amazing act is performed "according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself."
  • The same omnipotence Christ used to create the universe and conquer death is the power He will use to resurrect and transform us. Our assurance rests entirely on Christ's absolute sovereignty and power.
  • The concept of "citizenship in heaven" is not just a beautiful theological idea; it is a practical guide for living.
  • Not Home Yet

Something to do

Because our home is secured and our transformation is certain, we are free to live a life of selfless distinction, motivated by the imminent return of our King, Jesus Christ.

If we believe all of the Bible to be true, it should be evident in the manner in which we live!
