Scripture:

ROMANS 2:1-4:25

Instinctive Obedience

Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it.

Romans 2:14

My Takeaways

Something Old

Instinctive:

  • prompted by or resulting from or as if from instinct

Instinct:

  • a natural or innate impulse, inclination, or tendency

Obedience becomes instinctive when we

  • Allow our heart to be shaped by God’s Word.
  • Allow our life to be governed by Holy Spirit.
  • Allow our will to be surrendered to God’s Will.

When outsiders who have never heard of God’s law follow it more or less by instinct, they confirm its truth by their obedience. They show that God’s law is not something alien, imposed on us from without, but woven into the very fabric of our creation.”
Romans 2:14 (MSG)

The more we obey:

  • The more we long to obey.
  • The more we love the Lord and long to please Him.
  • The more we obey the more natural obedience becomes.

Something New

For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
Romans 3:20

“It is the straight-edge of the Law that shows us how crooked we are.” - J.B. Phillip

Something to do

Obey until obedience is my first instinct, not a conversation I have to have with myself before I eventually submit.
