GALATIANS 3:24-6:18, ACTS 15:1-21

Trying To Be Right

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

Galatians 5:4

My Takeaways

Something Old

Subjecting ourselves to obedience as a means of rightness with God means we must bear the weight of obeying all the law. (They had 613 laws.)

Holding on legalism implies your righteousness depends on your obedience.

  • They couldn’t carry the weight of the law, so Jesus carried it for them, all the way to Calvary.
  • We can’t carry that weight of the Word, so Jesus carried it for us, all the way to Calvary.

We:

  • Obey, to be made right with God; we obey because we are made right with God.
  • Cheapen the cost of grace of Calvary when we suggest that our obedience has anything to do with our rightness with God.

Grace was expensive, let’s:

  • Not reduce its value by trying to be right with acts of obedience.
  • Live lives worthy of the price that was paid by allowing our love and appreciation to be demonstrated through obedience.

“Tongue cannot express, nor heart conceive what a terrible thing it is to make Christ worthless.” - Martin Luther

Something New

It doesn’t matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation.
Galatians 6:15

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:2

I love the connection of these verses. Transformation is a demonstration of our becoming a new creation.

Something to do

Don’t try to be right with God; rest in the rightness that belongs to me as a result of my faith in Jesus and let my gratitude be a demonstration through obedience and service to Him.
