Scripture:

JOHN 13:31-38, MARK 14:27-31, MATTHEW 26:31-35, LUKE 22:31-38, JOHN 14:1-15:17

The Helper

If you love me, obey  my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.

John 14:15-18

My Takeaways

Something Old

I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.
John 15:1

Something New

  • John 14 is part of Jesus' final discourse to His disciples before the cross. They were devastated by the news of His departure.
  • Jesus addresses their fear and grief not only by promising a heavenly home but also by promising a divine replacement—the Holy Spirit, whom He calls the Helper (Paraclete).
  • The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God, who executes the will of the Father and the Son in the life of the believer.
  • Jesus promises the Spirit to be the permanent, intimate presence of God with believers.
  • The Request and the Gift: Jesus states He will ask the Father, and "He will give you another Helper."
  • "Another Helper" (Paraclete): This Greek term means "one called alongside." It is translated as Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, or Helper. It implies someone who provides legal, emotional, and practical support.
  • "Another": The Greek word allos means "another of the same kind." This is a strong affirmation of the Spirit's deity and functional equality with Christ. The Spirit acts for Christ, just as Christ acted for the Father.
  • The Permanent Relationship: The Father will give the Spirit to abide "with you forever." This contrasts with Christ's physical presence, which was temporary. The Holy Spirit's indwelling is permanent, sealing the believer until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13-14).
  • The World Cannot Receive: The Spirit is called the "Spirit of Truth." The world cannot receive Him because it does not recognize Him. This highlights the regenerating and illuminating nature of the Spirit, which is exclusive to those whom God has saved (regeneration).
  • The Intimate Indwelling: "He dwells with you and will be in you... I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you."
  • The Spirit's indwelling is the means by which Christ personally fulfills His promise not to abandon His children. The Holy Spirit is the living, abiding presence of the Lord within the believer.
  • The Divine Teacher: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things."
  • The Spirit ensures that believers understand God's truth. He is the ultimate interpreter of Scripture, guiding believers into all truth (John 16:13).
  • The Faithful Reminder: The Spirit will "bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
  • The Spirit actively works to recall and apply Christ's teachings to the believer's mind and conscience, guiding decisions and correcting behavior. He is central to the process of sanctification (being made holy).
  • The Giver of Peace: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you."
  • The presence of the Spirit results in an assurance and serenity that transcends circumstances—the peace of God (Philippians 4:7). The Spirit comforts believers in their trials, fulfilling His role as the Comforter.
  • The Empowerer for Mission: Though not explicitly about the Spirit, Jesus says, "The works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father."
  • The Spirit's power enables believers to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20)—the "greater works" being the widespread, worldwide mission and conversion that followed Pentecost.
  • Indwelling and Authority: The Holy Spirit is the active agent of God in the world today. His presence in the believer is a mark of salvation, a guarantee of future glory, and a call to a life of submission.
  • The Necessity of Submission: Living "in the Spirit" means actively obeying His teaching (the Word) and yielding to His leading, allowing Him to produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
  • John 14 assures every believer that we are not orphans.

Something to do

The divine Helper resides within us as the abiding presence of Christ, serving as the Teacher, Guide, and Source of power needed to live according to God's will until Christ returns.

Recognize the work of the Holy Spirit (the Comforter/Helper) as Christ's divine replacement on earth, ensuring the believer's continuation in truth, comfort, and mission.

He doesn’t just show up when we “feel” different…Scripture tells us that He is with us always.
