Scripture:

LUKE 12:35-13:21, JOHN 9:1-41

A Crippled Christian

He saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

Luke 13:11

My Takeaways

Something Old

Why did Jesus have to suffer so terribly? Why couldn’t He die in a less painful way?

I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished
Luke 12:50

Something New

What cripples a Christians faith?

  • Disappointment
  • Unforgiveness
  • Church hurt
  • Moral, financial, or relationship failure
  • Leadership failure

More church isn't the answer. The woman went to synagogue for 18 years and remained in bondage. The answer is a touch from Jesus through the:

  • The power of Holy Spirit.
  • The authority of the Word.
  • An honest conversation with God concerning our hurts and disappointments.
  • Passage of time, submission to Spirit’s work, and compassion of our Father

“He must have bound her very cunningly to make the knot hold all that time, for he does not appear to have possessed her. You notice in reading the evangelists that our Lord never laid his hand on a person possessed with a devil. Satan had not possessed her, but he had fallen upon her once upon a time eighteen years before, and bound her up as men tie a beast in its stable, and she had not been able to get free all that while.” - Charles Spurgeon

Evidence of Spiritual Life:

  • Do I have genuine love for God’s Word and desire to read Scripture regularly?
  • Do I feel conviction when I sin, leading to repentance rather than rationalization?
  • Am I growing in love for other believers and desire for fellowship?
  • Do I have natural concern for the lost and desire to share the Gospel?
  • Has my attitude toward sin fundamentally changed since my conversion?
