Today's Sponsor of the day is

Scripture:

EZEKIEL 22:17-23:49, 2 KINGS 24:20-25:2, JEREMIAH 52:3-5, JEREMIAH 39:1, EZEKIEL 24:1-14

Silence

Then this message came to me from the LORD: “Son of man, with one blow I will take away your dearest treasure. Yet you must not show any sorrow at her death. Do not weep; let there be no tears. Groan silently, but let there be no wailing at her grave. Do not uncover your head or take off your sandals. Do not perform the usual rituals of mourning or accept any food brought to you by consoling friends.”

Ezekiel 24:15-17

My Takeaways

Something Old

“I, the LORD, have spoken! The time has come, and I won’t hold back. I will not change my mind, and I will have no pity on you. You will be judged on the basis of all your wicked actions, says the Sovereign LORD.”
Ezekiel 24:14

Something New

  • Ezekiel is not just a prophet; he's a living, breathing parable for the exiled Israelites.
  • His life, his actions, even his family, serve as a stark prophetic message.
  • The word of the Lord comes to Ezekiel with a prophecy that coincides exactly with the day Jerusalem and its temple are destroyed by the Babylonians.
  • The people of Judah are still in denial about the finality of their city's fate, and this passage serves to shatter that illusion.
  • God tells Ezekiel that He is about to "take away the delight of your eyes with a stroke." This is a euphemism for the sudden, tragic death of his beloved wife.
  • God gives him a specific command: "You shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down."
  • Ezekiel is to do the opposite of what is natural and expected. He is to perform his normal daily duties without any outward sign of grief. Ezekiel obeys, and his wife dies in the evening. The next morning, he does exactly as the Lord commanded.
  • The people, seeing his bizarre behavior, ask, "Will you not tell us what these things mean?" This is the moment Ezekiel has been waiting for. He explains that his wife's death is a sign for them.
  • Just as God took away the "delight of his eyes," He will destroy their temple, which they also call "the delight of their eyes."
  • God's judgment will be so severe that they will not even have the luxury of publicly mourning. Their grief will be internal and overwhelming.
  • The destruction of the temple, the loss of their children, and the fall of the city will leave them silent in their grief.
  • God promises that a fugitive will escape from Jerusalem and bring news of the destruction to Ezekiel in Babylon. When this happens, Ezekiel's mouth, which God had previously sealed (Ezekiel 3:26), will be opened again. He will be able to speak freely and no longer serve as a silent sign. The tragedy will become a reality, and his prophetic silence will be broken.
  • This text forces us to confront the idea that God's plan can include deep personal pain, even for His faithful servants. Ezekiel’s suffering was not random; it had a divine purpose.
  • The Israelites had placed their hope and identity in the temple and the city of Jerusalem. God's judgment was a radical act to show them that their security could not be found in physical structures or earthly things.
  • We can idolize things that are not God, and sometimes He must remove them to re-align our hearts.
  • God's plan is not always comfortable. Obedience may require immense personal sacrifice.
  • Beware of what you "delight" in. Is your hope in God alone, or in things He has given you?
  • Grief is a profound part of the human experience, but it's not always a private one. Sometimes, our suffering can serve a greater purpose in God's plan.
  • God’s judgment is complete and certain. He is not joking or threatening; He is doing exactly what He says He will do.

Something to do

Delight yourself in the Lord. Seek Him. Obey Him. Glorify Him.
