Scripture:

HABAKKUK 1:1-3:19, ZEPHANIAH 1:1-2:7

True to God

“What good is an idol carved by man,
or a cast image that deceives you?
How foolish to trust in your own creation—
a god that can’t even talk!
What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols,
    ‘Wake up and save us!’
To speechless stone images you say,
    ‘Rise up and teach us!’

Can an idol tell you what to do?
They may be overlaid with gold and silver,
    but they are lifeless inside.
But the Lord is in his holy Temple.
Let all the earth be silent before him.”

Habakkuk 2:18-20

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • God did not condemn Habakkuk for his honest questions and cries for help and justice.
  • What it might look like to “tread upon the heights” (Habakkuk 3:19): Baby ibex descends mountains to escape a fox: Planet Earth II BBC
  • When there is no sign of life or a pathway forward, God is still guiding us through situations that are difficult and scary to navigate.

Something New

  • His coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from his hands, where his awesome power is hidden. Pestilence marches before him; plague follows close behind.
    Habakkuk 3:4-5
Divine warrior storm gods of the ancient Near East were often portrayed with bolts of lightning in an upraised hand. There are similarities in how Yahweh is described and how gods are described in ancient Near Eastern mythology.
  • Habakkuk is likely referring to the priests who manipulate people by “making the idol speak” or pronouncing an oracle.
  • The ritual of “opening the mouth" in certain nations/religions was to transform the wooden image into the physical embodiment of the god. Ceremonial processes took place, like washing the mouth of the image and presenting food and drink to animate and enthrone the god. A god needed an image.
  • We can take something from the Bible and make it mean or say what you want. The question is, what is God actually saying?
  • The Bible was used to defend slavery. We have to know what God is really saying in the Bible, or we can use it as a weapon to make false idols speak.
  • The teaching of the Bible needs to align with the true character of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Something to do

Worship and love and teach about the one true God. Be diligent students of the Bible.
