Psalm 112:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

Esher (eh'-sher): blessed, happy

Fear: yah-ray (yaw-ray'): to fear, revere, of moral reverence or respect. The concept of fear is more about acknowledging God's majesty rather than being scared or terrified. not fear God in a sense of misery and reluctant obligation.

  • “The fear the Bible is talking about is best described as a profound reverence; that is, we are to revere God, or stand in awe of him.” - James Montgomery Boice

Delight: a strong feeling of great pleasure, satisfaction, or happiness.

  • “The man who duly ‘feareth God,’ is delivered from every other fear; the man who ‘delighteth in God’s commandments,’ is freed from every inordinate desire of earthly things.” - Thomas Horne

Obey: khaw-fates' (khaw-fates'): (have, take) delight, desire, favor, to incline to, to bend

  • “It is not enough to fear God, we must also love him: fear will deter us from evil; love will lead us to obedience.” - Adam Clarke

Jesus is our example of fearing the Lord and delighting in obedience.

Revered God

  • Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.
    Luke 22:42

Obedient unto death

  • He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
    Philippians 2:8

We

  • Fear out of respect and awe.
  • obey out of love.

“The fear of the Lord is the end of all fear.” - Warren Wiersbe

Something New

The book of Psalms contains three collections titled Hallel, with Psalms 113-118 known as the Egyptian Hallel, mainly because of their connection with Passover celebrations, commemorating Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. The psalms of the Egyptian Hallel were sung as part of the Passover ceremony, with Psalms 113-114 sung before the meal and Psalms 115-118 after the meal.

“This group is necessarily of special interest to us because in all probability, these psalms were sung by our Lord and His disciples on that dark night in which He was betrayed.” - G. Campbell Morgan

Something to do

Be happy; blessings to follow.
