PROVERBS 30:1-31:31

Handle With Care

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection. Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.

Proverbs 30:5-6

My Takeaways

Something Old

About Agur

These verses… they always challenge me… they are always part of my prayer utterances.

O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die. First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.
Proverbs 30:7-8

May I always recognize my weaknesses.  I love this quote regarding Proverbs 30:7-9.

“The author recognizes his weaknesses, both in his tendency to forget God when life is too easy and to turn in desperation away from God when life is too hard.” -  Duane Garrett

Something New

Cautions from a wise man:

Don’t add to it.

  • “Such add to God’s word as wrest it and rack it; making it speak that which it never thought; causing it to go two miles where it would go but one; gnawing and tawing it to their own purposes, as the shoemaker taws upper leather with his teeth.” - John Trapp

Don’t listen to, or give credence to those who add to it.

  • “Such a practice is apt to make one a popular Bible teacher since people think that the teacher has profound insight into the text and can find hidden truths. Sooner or later, however, such superinterpreters will be shown to be wrong.” - Duane Garrett

How do I avoid this? I don’t know my Bible like the experts.

Then become an “expert.”

  • Know the book.
  • Read the book.
  • Obey the book.

Something to do

Handle God’s Word with care. It is pure and without error.
