Scripture:

2 KINGS 2:1-25, 2 KINGS 4:1-44

When Your “Elijah” Leaves

Elisha was still at Jericho when they returned. “Didn’t I tell you not to go?” he asked.

2 Kings 2:18

My Takeaways

Something Old

“And when you have got their mantle, do not waste precious time in lamentations about them any more; get to your business. There is a river in your way; what then? Well, go to the Jordan as the prophet Elisha did, and try to pass it. Say not, ‘Where is Elijah?’ but ‘Where is the Lord God of Elijah?’ Elijah is gone, but his God is not; Elijah has gone away, but Jehovah is present, still.” - Charles Spurgeon

Wiersbe: We can’t live in the past, on the past, or for the past. We have to accept what is and move forward.

  • The best thing Elisha could do to honor Elijah was to get to the business of the Lord.
  • The best way we can honor those of the faith who leave us is to get to the business of the Lord.

What is the Lord’s business?

  • And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
    Luke 10:27 (ESV)

Who is your “Elijah?”

Something New

“What?” his servant exclaimed. “Feed a hundred people with only this?”
But Elisha repeated, “Give it to the people so they can eat, for this is what the LORD says: Everyone will eat, and there will even be some left over!”

2 Kings 4:43

“How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.”
They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.”

Mark 6:37

I love the similarity in these stories.

Something to do

Be about my Father’s business.
