PROVERBS 14:1-16:33

Building Something Good

A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.

Proverbs 14:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.
Proverbs 14:16

Something New

  • Building something is an active role. It denotes authority and intention and implementation.
  • What can we do to actively take part in building something good in our homes, schools, churches, work, community?
    • Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains. Proverbs 14:13–It's easy to over-spiritualize grief and sadness, but this will not help us understand ourselves or others, and will not help us heal. We shouldn’t have to conceal our heavy hearts.
    • It is a sin to belittle one’s neighbor; blessed are those who help the poor. Proverbs 14:21, Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honors him. Proverbs 14:31–Generosity is a huge indication of a person’s heart. There is always something we can share or use to help others in need.
    • A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. Proverbs 15:1–Disagreements are a part of life, but we can communicate calmly and with regard for another person’s humanity..
    • Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:4–Emotional safety is needed for children to learn, and for others around us to understand what we are trying to communicate. We can be speaking the truth, but if it is said in a crushing way it does not help or accomplish anything.
    • The LORD tears down the house of the proud, but he protects the property of widows. Proverbs 15:25–God provides and takes care of widows, single women, single moms. These groups were seriously vulnerable to hardship in the ancient Near East, and throughout much of history.
    • A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends. Proverbs 16:28–Does it need to be said? Or can we take it to God and spill our complaints to Him instead?

Something to do

Love God and love others with intention; build something good!
