PROVERBS 1:1-4:27

It All Starts With Fear

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 1:7

My Takeaways

Something Old

Yir'ah (yir-aw'): fear, reverence, awe

The Hebrew word "yirah" primarily denotes a profound respect or reverence, often in the context of a relationship with God. It encompasses both the fear of God's power and judgment and a reverential awe of His majesty and holiness. In the Old Testament, "yirah" is frequently associated with wisdom and obedience, as the fear of the LORD is considered the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

When you cry out for insight, and ask for understanding you will understand what it means to fear the LORD. The Lord:

  • Grants wisdom.
  • Gives knowledge and understanding.
  • Grants common sense.
  • Shields those who walk in integrity.
  • Guards the path of the just.

Wisdom will enter your heart.

  • Knowledge will fill you with joy.
  • Wise choices will watch over you.
  • Understanding will keep you safe.
  • Wisdom will save you from evil people.

Something New

Another ripple effect of fearing the Lord:

  • Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.
    Proverbs 3:7-8

Something to do

Fear the Lord, the benefits are too great not to learn this discipline.
