Scripture:

1 CHRONICLES 23:1-25:31

Common and Sacred

And so, under the supervision of the priests, the Levites watched over the Tabernacle and the Temple and faithfully carried out their duties of service at the house of the LORD.

1 Chronicles 23:32

My Takeaways

Something Old

When David was an old man, he appointed his son Solomon to be king over Israel.
1 Chronicles 23:1

David took great care to prepare for Solomon’s reign, including preparations for the Temple, but he also nearly failed in securing Solomon’s throne. (1 Kings 1)

Something New

  • Scribes in the ancient world were trained in specialized skills, and were accountants, historians, journalists, secretaries, tutors, and librarians of their day.
  • Some of the sons of Asaph were set apart for the ministry of prophesying accompanied by musical instruments. It was common in the ancient world to utilize music to prepare them for prophetic roles.
  • “Precise translation of many Hebrew words for instruments is made difficult by the lack of Biblical descriptions. Even ancient translators, such as those working on the Greek Septuagint, often had little understanding of the meanings of the Hebrew musical terms. Also, modern associations with certain names can be misleading. For example, shofar is often translated “trumpet,” calling to mind a brass instrument rather than what it actually was: a ram’s horn.” Archaeological Study Bible pg. 797
  • Lots were cast to determine whose turn and when to serve at the Temple.
  • Duties of the Levites: oversee the courtyards, side rooms, purification, bread set out, flour for grain offerings, unleavened bread, baking, mixing, measurements, recitation of thanksgiving every morning, evening, and during burnt offerings.
  • The duties of the Levites were both common and sacred.
  • Our everyday lives have jobs and duties that seem small, but are both common and sacred.

Something to do

Remember that our seemingly small or ordinary contributions can also be sacred work in the Kingdom.
